Interesting Finds at The Yard
Scrapyards, often dismissed as places of discarded metal and forgotten machinery, occasionally have hidden gems waiting to be explored. Beyond the piles of rusted metal and forgotten relics lie stories, history, and the thrill of discovery.
In this blog post, we find some interesting things at a scrapyard and the joy of uncovering a bit of our history that shouldn’t be destroyed.
Our first find recently, was this helmet. Being near to RAF Manston, which was a heavily used airfield, we felt we’d like to bring the history of this helmet to life. Who would have worn it and what did the wearer do and see whilst under its protection?
We think the AW for Air Warden, and that seems to be what other people have said too from our social media posts. Straightaway from finding it we knew it had to find its way to a museum.Interesting Find 2!
Our most recent find to date is this curious object. We think it is a 1940s brass Pyrene Fire Extinguisher, and this was confirmed after using the powers of social media. We also discovered a link to Manston with the makers of the extinguisher.
The Pyrene Company Limited ran from 1914 until they became Chubb Fire and Security Limited in 1971, and whilst we unfortunately don’t have the time to fully investigate the finds, according to our limited research (Wikipedia🤨) “in that same year a Bristol Britannia aircraft, flown by test pilot Donald Chubb, landed on a carpet of Pyrene foam at Manston.” Did anyone witness this?
At Reclamet we have a close relationship with RAF Manston Museum, which is a fabulous volunteer run museum, that brings to life the history of this airfield, its events, it’s aircraft and the history of people that were there. It made perfect sense to donate both items to them to add to their displays.
Don’t forget to check out the amazing displays at RAF Manston History Museum – RAF Manston History Museum, It’s a wonderful place to spend your day.
They have a volunteer-run café and organize events on the airfield all year round. Make sure to visit and have a great time!
